First, remove as much of the red wine as quickly as possible by blotting it with an absorbent material, such as paper or cotton towels. Place the towel on the front and back of the carpet when possible, and press down hard. Hold it for a few minutes to absorb the wine. Remove and replace the towels and simply repeat the process.
Place a clean towel on the bottom of the material. Then mix a bowl of liquid laundry detergent and hydrogen peroxide. Wear gloves, and take a clean towel and dip it in. Use the wet towel to blot the stain; this will in essence break the bond of the tannins. The towel at the back should absorb any excess liquid, so the carpet is not ruined.
To remove red wine stains, repeat the above steps a few times, and rinse the spot thoroughly with cold water in order to remove the hydrogen peroxide. In theory, the red wine stain should have disappeared. If not, your only option will be to call a professional.
